Jesus’s cross in Balatlar Church, the fragments of the True Cross of Jesus Christ was found in the stone chest in Balatlar Church in Sinop. The church was a former Roman temple converted into a Byzantine church in the 7th century. A stone chest with an image of Christian cross on it, which is thought to have preserved the fragment of the true cross in which Jesus was crucified, was found by Turkish archaeologists in 2009. The finding, which is considered sacred by the Christian world, is kept in Sinop Archeology Museum.

The Balatlar church in Sinop has been under archaeological excavations by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University since 2009. The director of the excavation team is Professor Gülgün Köroğlu, the university’s art history department. According to Köroğlu “We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was part of the True Cross. This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far.” She also added, “We have also found a number of human bones during our excavation, we have been working here for four years and have found more than 2,000 skeletons. We have learned many things during the excavation that we did not previously know.”
According to Mr. Hikmet Tosun, he is the provincial director of culture and tourism, Sinop is a port city and one of the oldest settlements of humanity. He has also emphasized the importance of Balatlar church excavation in terms of both city history and the enlightenment of world history. The archaeological studies have been continued for the last 9 years, he stated that “The excavations here have been very effective in the enrichment of our museum. We are currently exhibiting 2 thousand works in the Sinop museum, the number of works in our warehouse is 11 thousand and all of these works came from this excavation area. Very important findings have also emerged, following this excavation work in Greece and Italy. The church here is also a Saint Fokas Church. According to the belief, Saint Fokas helps people who are stuck in the sea. said.

Mr. Tosun also stated that when this area is put into service as a ruin, it will make a great contribution to the Black Sea tourism.
